How much does a wedding cost in Nigeria in 2026? Honest ranges, and how couples are covering it
The short answer
There is no reliable national average for what a wedding costs in Nigeria: we found no official figure, and the numbers that circulate have no traceable method. The widest reported range, from a wedding-blog survey cited by Dataphyte in 2025, is ₦150,000 to ₦20 million. Guest count drives the bill more than anything, and many couples now cover part of it with cash gifts by transfer, a wishlist of funds and Aso Ebi sales.
- No reliable national average exists; treat any single 'average cost' figure with suspicion.
- A wedding-blog survey cited by Dataphyte (2025) put the range at ₦150,000 to ₦20 million, with no stated method.
- In Lagos in 2023, one writer reported mainland halls for 300 to 500 guests at ₦1.5m to ₦2.5m, and food at ₦2,500 to ₦4,000 a plate.
- Headline inflation was 34.80% in December 2024, and food inflation 39.84% (NBS).
- Couples are filling the gap with cash gifts, wishlist funds and Aso Ebi, now that spraying cash is being prosecuted.
Is there an average cost of a wedding in Nigeria?
No. We looked for one and couldn't find a figure with a source behind it. We found no official statistic on wedding spending, and the 'average' numbers that get repeated online don't say who was asked or how. A wedding for 80 people in a church hall and a two-day affair for 1,000 guests are different events, so one national number wouldn't tell you much anyway.
What does exist is a reported range. In March 2025, Dataphyte, a Nigerian data publication, cited a survey by the wedding blog Naija Glam Weddings. The survey doesn't explain its method, so read it as a rough spread, not an average.1
₦150,000 to ₦20 million
What organising a Nigerian wedding typically costs, according to a wedding-blog survey cited by Dataphyte in 2025. The same piece notes that most Nigerians earn about ₦100,000 a month.1
What the big items cost: Lagos, 2023
The most detailed public breakdown we found is from Nairametrics in April 2023, based on the writer's own observations in Lagos. These are 2023 prices, before the inflation of 2024, so expect today's quotes to be higher.2
| Item | Reported cost in 2023 |
|---|---|
| Hall on the Lagos mainland, 300 to 500 guests | ₦1.5m to ₦2.5m |
| Food | ₦2,500 to ₦4,000 per plate |
The same article calls guest count perhaps the major driver of cost. That matches how the bill is built: hall size, plates of food, drinks, souvenirs and Aso Ebi all grow with every name on the list.2
Why weddings got more expensive
Prices rose fast in 2023 and 2024. AFP reported in May 2024 that the naira had fallen from about 450 to about 1,500 to the dollar in a year, which pushes up anything imported, from fabric to sound equipment.3
34.80%
Nigeria's headline inflation in December 2024, with food inflation at 39.84%, from the National Bureau of Statistics. The CPI has since been rebased, so later figures aren't directly comparable.4
Couples have responded. BusinessDay reported in 2024 that receptions and Aso Ebi orders were shrinking as costs rose.5
How couples are covering the cost now
Guests have always helped pay for Nigerian weddings, through spraying, family contributions and gifts. What has changed is how the money moves.
- Cash gifts by transfer. Vanguard reported in 2023 that invitations now carry 'cash only' gift requests; one bride called it the trend now.
- A wishlist of funds. Instead of a list of items, couples name plans guests can chip into: the honeymoon, the first year's rent, a fridge.
- Selling Aso Ebi. Guests already expect to buy the fabric, and some couples price it to help with costs.
That last point has deep roots. The scholar Okechukwu Nwafor describes Aso Ebi as a social currency that mixes gift and sale. A 2023 review of his book notes that selling Aso Ebi at a profit is common, and that those profits may go towards other wedding expenses.678
Spraying cash is the one old route that has become risky. Spraying naira notes is an offence under the CBN Act 2007, and since 2024 it has been enforced: in April 2025 a Kano make-up artist was jailed for six months, without the option of a fine, for spraying ₦100,000 at his own wedding. Many guests now give by transfer instead.91011
