Nigerian celebration money in numbers: weddings, Aso Ebi, burials, babies and gifts (2026, with sources)
The short answer
There is no reliable national average for what a Nigerian wedding or burial costs, but the sourced figures show costs rising fast: one survey reported weddings from ₦150,000 to ₦20 million, and one Lagos funeral planner says a standard burial package went from ₦3,500,000 in 2021 to over ₦15,000,000. Spraying naira notes is an offence under the CBN Act, and research consistently finds that people appreciate gifts they asked for, and cash, more than givers expect.
- Weddings: reported from ₦150,000 to ₦20 million; there is no reliable national average.
- Spraying naira can carry at least six months in prison or a fine of at least ₦50,000 under the CBN Act 2007, s.21.
- Nigerians abroad sent home about $22.8 billion in 2025, the most in sub-Saharan Africa.
- In US experiments, people valued cash more than any gift they had asked for.

How to read these numbers
We only list figures we have checked against their source. Where a number comes from one person's account, a commercial study or research outside Nigeria, we say so. Prices from interviews are reported examples, not averages. Inflation figures before and after Nigeria's January 2025 price index rebasing can't be compared directly.
Weddings
₦150,000 – ₦20m
The reported range for organising a Nigerian wedding, from a wedding-blog survey with no stated method, reported by Dataphyte in 2025. Most Nigerians earn about ₦100,000 a month, the same report notes.1
In Lagos in 2023, a mainland hall for 300 to 500 guests was reported at ₦1.5m to ₦2.5m and food at ₦2,500 to ₦4,000 a plate, with guest numbers the main driver of cost. These are one writer's 2023 observations; prices have risen since.2
Headline inflation was 34.80% in December 2024, with food inflation at 39.84%. The price index was rebased in January 2025, so later figures aren't directly comparable.3
Couples are cutting receptions and Aso Ebi as costs rise, and invitations now often ask for cash only.45
Spraying money and the law
6 months
The minimum prison term for spraying naira notes at social occasions under the CBN Act 2007, s.21(3), punishable under s.21(1), or a fine of at least ₦50,000, or both.6
The rule was largely ignored until enforcement began in 2024. On 12 April 2024, the Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced Bobrisky to six months without an option of fine for abusing the naira. In April 2025, the Federal High Court in Kano jailed a make-up artist for six months, without an option of fine, for spraying ₦100,000 at his own wedding.789
Since the crackdown, guests have moved to transfers on the dance floor, money boxes and vouchers bought by transfer.1011
Aso Ebi
Selling Aso Ebi at a profit is a recognised practice: a scholarly review of Okechukwu Nwafor's book on Aso Ebi notes that the profits may be used to offset other wedding costs. Guests who don't buy can be left out of the cycle of gifts.1213
₦200,000
What one guest told Daily Trust she paid for her last Aso Ebi: 4 yards of fabric. Tailors interviewed charged from ₦40,000, and ₦80,000 or more for corset and beaded styles.14
The cheapest lace in Lagos markets sold for about ₦35,000 in the 2025 festive season. Nigeria's textile imports rose from ₦377 billion in 2023 to ₦726 billion in 2024 as the naira fell.1516
Burials
₦15,000,000
What one Lagos funeral planner says a standard burial package now costs, up from ₦3,500,000 in 2021. One planner's estimate, not an average.17
Anambra State's burial law, passed in 2019, limits ceremonies to one day, caps mortuary stays at two months and limits condolence gifts to cash and modest drinks, with a fine of ₦100,000 or six months in prison for breaking it.18
Research on Nigerian burials has long found that the duty of burying a parent, especially a father, often falls on the first son. In South Africa, households were found to spend the equivalent of a year's income on an adult's funeral.1920
Babies
131.1%
A year's supply of baby formula in Nigeria as a share of the average annual wage, in a 2026 study by remittance company Remitly. Nappies, wipes and rash cream came to 123.6%. The figures compare each category with earnings separately and shouldn't be added together.21
Out-of-pocket payments made up 71.9% of Nigeria's current health spending in 2023, by the World Bank and WHO's measure. A private caesarean section was reported at ₦300,000 to ₦1,500,000 in 2025.2223
New homes
Lagos's Tenancy Law caps advance rent from a new yearly tenant at one year. Lagos's housing commissioner has said tenants can't be expected to pay one or two years upfront in today's economy.2425
| Item | Price | Where from |
|---|---|---|
| 121-litre single-door fridge | ₦254,100 | Retailer list price, August 2026 |
| 4-burner standing gas cooker | ₦194,800 | Retailer list price, August 2026 |
| 1HP split air conditioner | ₦375,400 – ₦400,300 | Retailer list price, August 2026 |
| 11kVA generator | ₦700,000 – ₦750,000 | Dealers in Lagos and Abuja, July 2024 |
Appliance prices above are from a major Nigerian retailer's August 2026 list and from dealers surveyed in 2024. Nigeria's official housing deficit is 14.9 million units (2025), lower than the 17 to 28 million often quoted.262728
How the money moves
₦1.07 quadrillion
Value of e-payments processed by NIBSS in 2024, the first year past a quadrillion naira, across 11.2 billion transactions.29
$22.8 billion
Personal remittances received by Nigeria in 2025, the most in sub-Saharan Africa.30
Banks were the costliest way to send money home at the end of 2023, averaging 12% of the amount; digital services averaged under 5%. Tricking people into sending money remained the predominant fraud technique in Nigeria in 2023, a year with ₦17.67 billion lost to fraud.3132
Over 96% of Nigerian internet users aged 16 and over say they use WhatsApp.33
What research says about gifts
In five US experiments, people appreciated gifts they had asked for more than surprises, and appreciated money more than any item they had requested, while givers assumed money would be the least favoured gift.34
83.9%
How much recipients valued non-cash gifts, on average, relative to what givers paid, in a US study of 246 gifts. Later studies dispute the size of the effect.35
50%
How much people overestimated the number of others they'd need to ask for help, in US studies. People say yes more often than we expect.36
Giving rises as a fund nears its goal and drops once it's reached, in crowdfunding and charity research. Asking people to round up worked better than asking for a fixed small amount: in one field study, 45% agreed to round up against 18% for a fixed ask.373839
Visibility cuts both ways. When contributions were visible, people tended to give amounts close to everyone else's to avoid standing out, which is why some hosts prefer to hide amounts.40
