How to share the cost of a burial fairly as a family

Updated Monday, 12 October 2026 · 5 min read

The short answer

Write down every cost, agree as a family how to divide it (equal shares, shares by branch of the family, or each person taking a specific cost), and keep one record of what has come in. A Spray remembrance page gives the family one account number, records each contribution with a name, and lets relatives give towards a specific cost or a general fund.

  • List the costs before anyone pays anything.
  • Choose a way of sharing the family agrees is fair.
  • Let relatives take on a specific cost if they prefer.
  • Keep one record, and share a summary at the end.

₦15,000,000

What one Lagos funeral planner says a standard burial package now costs, up from ₦3,500,000 in 2021. Costs vary widely; this is one planner's estimate.1

Burial and remembrance arrangements involve many separate costs, and they are easy to lose track of. Sit down with the key family members, write them all down, and note who is getting quotes for each.

  • Mortuary fees and transport
  • The casket and the burial site
  • The service: venue, programme printing, music
  • The reception: food, drinks, chairs and canopies
  • Family Aso Ebi
  • Support for the immediate family afterwards

Ways families share the cost

Common ways to share
ApproachHow it worksWorth knowing
Equal sharesEach sibling or adult child gives the same amountSimple, but harder on those who earn less
By branchEach branch of the family takes a share and decides how to raise itSuits large extended families
By costEach person or branch takes a specific cost, such as the reception or the programmeClear ownership; someone should check nothing is missed
Open contributionsRelatives and friends give what they can towards a general fundFills the gaps; works alongside the others

Many families combine these: the immediate family agrees fixed shares, and the wider family and friends contribute what they can.

Set up the record on Spray

  1. Agree the host

Choose the family member who will receive the money. Payouts go only to their verified bank account.

  2. Create a remembrance page

Choose Remembrance and add the details of the service and a short message from the family.

  3. Add each shared cost

Add the costs relatives can take on as wishlist items, such as Reception or Programme printing, with the amount needed. Relatives give towards each one, or cover it in full, and the family sees what each has raised.

  4. Turn on contributions

For anyone who would rather give to the general fund.

  5. Add helpers

Add co-hosts to help manage the page, and a shop coordinator if there is family Aso Ebi.

  6. Turn on payments and share

The host confirms who they are, the page gets its own account number, and the link goes to the family group.

Keeping it fair, and seen to be fair

The weight often falls on one person. A study of Nigerian obituaries and burials found that the duty of burying a parent, especially a father, often lies with the first son. A shared record spreads it openly.2

  • One account number means nobody wonders where the money went.
  • Each contribution is recorded on the dashboard with a name and an amount.
  • Cash, and transfers to personal accounts, can be logged by hand so the record is complete.
  • Other visitors do not see who has given unless the family turns that on.
  • When the arrangements are complete, share a short summary of what came in and what it paid for.

Questions

What is the fairest way to split funeral costs among siblings?
There is no single answer. Equal shares are simplest; some families adjust for what each person can afford, or let each person take a specific cost. What matters most is agreeing early and keeping one record.
Can a relative pay for one specific cost?
Yes. Add that cost as a wishlist item, and the relative can give towards it or cover it in full.
What if someone gives cash at the house?
The host logs it on the dashboard with Log a payment and assigns it to a cost or to the general fund.
