Spray vs a Paystack or Flutterwave payment link for your event
The short answer
A Paystack or Flutterwave payment link takes money: Paystack publishes 1.5% + NGN 100 per local payment, capped at NGN 2,000, and Flutterwave lists 2% plus VAT. It doesn't sell Aso Ebi with stock and closing dates, match bank transfers to guests and items, show wishlist progress, or give guests one page for everything. If you're selling one simple item and are comfortable with a business account, a payment link is likely to cost less and will do the job.
- Paystack: 1.5% + NGN 100 local, capped at NGN 2,000; NGN 100 waived under NGN 2,500.
- Paystack international cards: 3.9% + NGN 100.
- Flutterwave: 2% local, 4.8% international, plus 7.5% VAT on fees.
- A payment link records payments; it doesn't tie a transfer to a guest or an item.
- Spray's payment partner is Paystack; Spray adds the event page and the matching on top.
What a payment link costs
1.5% + NGN 100
Paystack's published fee for local payments in Nigeria. Fees are capped at NGN 2,000, and the NGN 100 is waived for payments under NGN 2,500. International cards are 3.9% + NGN 100.1
2%
Flutterwave's listed fee per local transaction in Nigeria (4.8% for international), with transaction fees subject to 7.5% VAT.2
| Payment | Paystack, local | Flutterwave, local |
|---|---|---|
| ₦2,000 | ₦30 (NGN 100 waived) | ₦40 + ₦3 VAT |
| ₦50,000 | ₦850 | ₦1,000 + ₦75 VAT |
| ₦200,000 | ₦2,000 (the cap) | No cap listed; see their site |
Paystack lets a business pass its fees on to the payer. Pricing changes from time to time, so check both providers' pages before you decide.1
What a payment link does, and what it doesn't
A payment link is a checkout. Guests open it, pay, and you see a list of payments on your dashboard. For many things that's all you need. An event usually needs more:
- Aso Ebi with stock and closing dates. A link doesn't know you have 40 pieces of lace, or stop orders when they're gone, or close a week before the tailors' deadline.
- Matching transfers. Most guests transfer from their banking app, and a sender name like 'ADEBAYO O.' doesn't say which guest or which item. A link doesn't sort that out.
- Wishlist progress. A link can't show that the fridge is half funded, so guests can't chip in towards what's left.
- One page for guests. Aso Ebi, the wishlist and cash gifts end up as several links in a WhatsApp message.
- An account with the provider. You open a Paystack or Flutterwave business account and complete their checks before a link can take payments, which is a lot for one personal celebration.
₦476.89 trillion
The value of instant bank transfers (NIP) in Nigeria in the first half of 2024 alone, across 5,626,762,540 transactions. Transfers are how people pay, so an event needs a way to know who sent each one.3
What Spray adds
Spray's payment partner is Paystack. What Spray adds is the event around the payment:
- Each page gets its own account number. A transfer for exactly an item's price, or a whole multiple of it, is matched to that item.
- If the sender's name matches a guest with an open order, the payment is added to it, part payments included. Anything else waits in your review queue with a suggestion.
- The shop sells Aso Ebi in sections, with prices, stock, closing dates and pickup or delivery.
- Wishlist items show progress if you want them to, and funded items move to a Bought section.
- Guests abroad pay by card in pounds, dollars, euros or Canadian dollars if you turn them on.
- Money goes to your verified bank account. Spray never holds it in a wallet.
Setting up a page is free. There's a small fee: ₦100 + 1.5% per payment, never more than ₦2,000, and you choose per section whether guests cover it or it comes out of your payout.

When a payment link is the better choice
If you're only selling one simple thing, say gate tickets at one price or a single souvenir, and you already run a business account, a payment link is likely to be cheaper and perfectly fine. You pay the processor's fee and nothing else. Spray earns its fee when there are many guests, several items and lots of transfers to reconcile.
